What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign consists of a series of clear, custom-fit plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place over time. Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners are removable — you’ll wear them 20 to 22 hours per day and remove them for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing.

Invisalign aligners are also virtually invisible, which makes them an appealing option for teens and adults alike. The transparent aligners are smooth and comfortable, and won’t irritate your gums or cheeks like metal braces.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign works by using carefully calibrated force to move your teeth into their optimal position. Here are the steps:

  • Impressions: We’ll take digital scans or impressions of your teeth.
  • Aligners: Invisalign uses these scans to 3D print a series of custom aligners that match your treatment plan.
  • Treatment: You’ll switch to a new set of aligners approximately every couple of weeks as your teeth move.
  • Adjustments: You’ll visit us every four to eight weeks so we can monitor progress and order adjustments as needed.
  • Retention: Once your teeth reach their final position, you’ll receive retainers.

What Can Invisalign Fix?

Invisalign is highly effective for:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Crooked or twisted teeth
  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Crossbites

The aligners apply specific, controlled force to gently move your teeth in the optimal direction over time. While treatment times vary, Invisalign can straighten your smile in an average of just 12 to 18 months!

Who’s a Good Invisalign Candidate?

Although results may vary, Invisalign can work well for many teens and adults. Here are some factors we consider when assessing Invisalign candidacy:

  • Dental Health: Candidates need healthy gums and teeth to undergo treatment. Severe gum disease or decay may make you ineligible.
  • Type of Crowding: Invisalign works well for mildly to moderately crooked, gapped, or crowded teeth. Severe crowding may require braces or further orthodontic treatment.
  • Bite Issues: Invisalign can improve many underbites, overbites, and crossbites. However, it may not work for severe bite issues.
  • Lifestyle: You’ll need to be diligent about wearing your aligners as instructed and keeping up with dental visits.
  • Motivation: Invisalign requires a commitment to wear aligners consistently and follow the orthodontist’s instructions for the best possible results.

During your consultation, we’ll thoroughly evaluate your oral health and goals to determine if you’re a good fit for Invisalign treatment.

Who’s Not a Candidate For Invisalign?

While Invisalign can treat a wide variety of cases, there are some limitations. Invisalign may not work for:

  • Severely Misaligned Jaws: Jaw surgery may be required first to align your bite.
  • Complex Bite Issues: Severe underbites, overbites, and open bites may require traditional braces instead.
  • Very Severe Crowding: Extremely crooked teeth may need more space created first before Invisalign.
  • Tooth Extractions: Removing teeth creates space which can be unpredictable with Invisalign.
  • Very Young Children: Traditional braces may be better for younger kids.

During your comprehensive exam, Dr. Hindi will be able to determine if your case is too complex for Invisalign and if traditional braces or other orthodontic treatments are required instead.
