Establishing a Dental Home

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children should have their initial dental visit when their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday. Establishing a dental home can play a crucial role in your child’s development and their oral health. We set a benchmark for your child’s health and help them get accustomed to their biannual dental checkups, our office environment, and having our dental team examine their mouths. Children that start visiting the dentist at an early age are more likely to not have dental anxiety.

Dental Tips & Tricks

We understand that getting your kiddo excited about brushing their teeth can be a challenge. Adding an oral hygiene routine into an already hectic morning and nighttime routine can be a tall feat. At Sterling Heights Dentistry, we teach parents the tell-show-do method to help make at-home dental routines easier for kids and their parents!

Tell

Explain to your little one how brushing and flossing can keep their teeth healthy and strong. Use kid-friendly terms and give your child a chance to ask any questions they may have.

Show

Kids look up to their parents and often copy what they do. Try brushing and flossing your teeth next to them so that you can show them how it’s done. You can even make a game out of it, whether that’s a two-minute brushing dance party or a game to get rid of the “sugar monsters” on your teeth.

Do

Kids often need assistance brushing and flossing their teeth until around the age of five. Try to keep a regular routine. You can also use little prizes to motivate your child to brush twice a day, such as stickers on a calendar.
